The Innovation Behind Hover Space: A New Architecture Paradigm
The Hover Space, an innovative extension of the KLE Society Head Office in Belagavi, India, offers a fascinating example of how modern architecture can blend seamlessly with historical context. Designed by Thirdspace Architecture Studio, this project carefully navigates the challenges of expanding a 50-year-old corporate office located within a century-old educational campus. The approach taken respects the original building's institutional value while enhancing its functionality.
Thoughtful Design Meets Historical Respect
When tasked with creating an extension that could coexist with its surroundings, the architects faced a crucial design challenge: to expand without overshadowing the historical significance of the existing structure. The old two-storey building already integrated well into the campus but required additional space without intrusive structural alterations. This need inspired the architects to design a new structure that appears to 'hover' above the original building, supported by only eight cylindrical RCC columns, maintaining the vitality of activities beneath.
Climate-Conscious Architecture for Modern Needs
Incorporating practical features for sustainability, the new office spans an impressive 1,000 square meters and is designed for both spatial efficiency and climatic adaptability. The continuous verandah—drawing inspiration from colonial architectural styles—creates a vital social space while acting as a climatic buffer, shielding the interior from harsh weather. Featuring operable aluminium fins, the design enables enhanced airflow, ensuring a comfortable working environment.
Embracing Community Spaces
The design now includes a striking triple-height entry portal, leading visitors through a visually impressive gateway that directs them onto a tree-lined avenue. This innovation not only safeguards heritage structures but also fosters a strong sense of community within the campus, integrating modern office functionalities with a respect for the past.
Why This Matters
Architects and designers can learn valuable lessons from Hover Space’s integration of modern needs with historical preservation. Such approaches promote a thoughtful perspective on urban architectural practices, guiding future developments to respect both community heritage and contemporary functionality.
